Het verband tussen de olieproductie en de olieprijs wordt door sommigen stevig ontkend. Zo beweert Saudi-Aramco nog steeds dat de prijsstijging van de afgelopen jaren vrijwel geheel te wijten is aan speculatie en raffinageproblematiek. De Saoedi’s hebben hun investeringen in de olie-industrie voor de komende vijf jaar met 40 miljard opgehoogd naar een totaal van 129 miljard dollar. Dat kondigde de Saoedische olieminister Ali-Naimi afgelopen zondag aan. De extra investeringen gaan vooral naar het uitbreiden van raffinagecapaciteit en petrochemische capaciteit in ondermeer China, de VS en Saoedi-Arabië zelf. Met de nieuwe investeringsplannen verschuift de focus van de Saoedi’s richting de downstream raffinage en verwerkingskant van de oliesector. Khalid al Falil, de vice-president van Saudi Aramco omschreef het als volgt: ‘We are clearly focused on the downstream as the area of greatest potential for future growth and impact.’ Een zet die merkwaardig is in het licht van de stijgende olieprijs. Je zou verwachten dat er sterk meer geïnvesteerd wordt in het verhogen van de productie. Het bedrijf doet daar nauwelijks aanstalten toe. Er is meer dan voldoende olie op de markt volgens Aramco. Bedrijf AlgaeLink in Roosendaal gaat Air France-KLM dit jaar biobrandstof leveren uit algen. Door de hoge brandstofprijzen en strenge milieueisen zijn luchtvaartmaatschappijen op zoek naar schonere alternatieven.

Een Fokker 50 gaat de testvluchten maken tussen Amsterdam en Londen. AlgaeLink haalt via een ingewikkeld proces biomassa en olie uit algen. Hier wordt vervolgens brandstof van gemaakt. Inmiddels hebben ook cruisemaatschappijen interesse getoond in de brandstof van het bedrijf uit Roosendaal.

AlgaeLink and KLM will cooperate in
developing the next generation alternative
aviation fuel

The Dutch company AlgaeLink, a global manufacturer of commercial scale algae
cultivation equipment and algae-to-fuel-technology, has signed an exclusive
agreement for a pilot project with KLM on developing alternative fuel for the aviation
industry. The announcement was made on the fifteenth of April 2008 at the Future
Fuels Aviation Summit in London.

The purpose of the Future Fuels Aviation Summit was to look at immediate possibilities
to reduce fuel consumption. At the same time different ways and new developments were
assessed concerning future fuel consumption. A road map for the next 5 to 15 years has
been created as a guideline for the aviation fuel sector. Experts gave lectures on fuel
efficiency techniques which can already be implemented today and about new
possibilities for alternative fuels for the aviation industry. AlgaeLink presented several
new technologies which proved it feasible to produce alternative aviation fuel for the
industry.

Hans van de Ven, Managing Director of AlgaeLink, is very pleased about the
cooperation with KLM: “Because of our expertise in optimising algae growth in a photo-
bioreactor (PBR) and the extraction of biomass and oil out of the PBR , they came to us.”

Not only the aviation industry is showing interest. Cruise companies have contacted
AlgaeLink as well. Van de Ven: “At this point in time we are negotiating with the
world’s largest cruise liner to build an algae-growing-and-oil-extraction-system on a
cruise ship. The emitted CO2 will be intercepted and together with the biological waste of
the ship will be used within the algae-to-oil-system. The oil will be extracted on board the
ship and can be used, after refining, directly in the diesel engines.”

Son Marco van de Ven, co-founder of the AlgaeLink company is also very proud: “This
project will consolidate our leading position in the development of the algae-to-fuel-
programme. We still have a long way to go before we will be able to replace all fossil
fuels with algae oil, but we have turned the right corner.

Met 130 dollar per vat olie, begint nu ook de vliegtuigindustrie zich op haar hoofd te krabben. Jim McNerney, CEO van Boeing, gaf tijdens de jaarlijkse aandeelhoudersvergadering aan dat de alsmaar stijgende prijs van olie de winstgroei van Boeing begint aan te tasten.

turmoil in some global equity markets and the considerable depreciation in the US dollar
