Maar zoals vaker: niets mee gebeurd. Vraag: is er een goed inzicht in de oliereserves onder het nu door ijsafsmelting vrijkomende gebied rond de Noordpool ? Ik lees af en toe hoge schattingen, maar vond nog geen goede expert analyse. In deze editie van Newsweek is ook een artikel te vinden, "The Secrets Inside: A few crucial numbers would tell us when oil production will peak, if companies and countries were forced to divulge them", van Matthew Simmons. Ik citeer uit het artikel: "One of the most critical issues of the 21st century is this: once the global oil supply peaks, how quickly will it begin an irreversible decline, and how swift will the decline be? There is one crucial set of numbers that could provide the answers to these questions, but almost all the major oil companies and producers are keeping them secret." Verder, "The world is not running out of oil, but the world is fast approaching peak output. Once this Rubicon is crossed, oil production will begin to decline. The key question is not whether but when. If strict new disclosure standards, requiring production reports on a quarterly basis going back five years, are imposed on the owners of just [the] 250 top-producing fields, it would be simple to create a bottom-up forecast of how our current global oil-production base will play out over the next three to five years. The answer is out there; we just can't get to it". Het is niet Newsweek dat beweert dat er meer dan genoeg olie is maar Maugeri. Gelukkig want dit betekent dat Peak Oil's boodschap wel aandacht van bladen zoals Newsweek al zou de aandacht veel en veel meer kunnen zijn. Vergelijkt Appels met Peren, (Kern in het artikel is een olieveld met zware olie, kun je niet vergelijken met de 96% conventionele olieproductie waar het bij peak oil om draait). Hij zegt niks over de dalende exploratietrend (maar is wel erg optimistisch over exploratie), doet net alsof de hele aarde nog niet afgescand is. 3d-seismic is een zeer veel gebruikte techniek.. ach ja Het zal weer s niet, Maugeri weer de vice president van oliemaatschappij ENI.
