Venezuela’s Chavez Says Oil Output Falling

Oil production in the western part of the country has unexpectedly fallen by 100,000 barrels per day, and officials are investigating whether that drop could be a result of sabotage, President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday.
Chavez said that problems have arisen in the western part of the country and state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. is working to step up production. He offered no other details, and it was unclear what the nature of those problems were or if they confined to a specific oil field.
“We should have been producing 1,066,000 barrels a day (in that zone) and we are under that figure,” Chavez said. “We are studying the possibility of sabotage that has made it difficult for us to produce at top levels.”
While Venezuela has consistently said it produces more than 3 million barrels of crude a day, independent analysts have said the figure is likely closer to 2.6 million barrels recently.
